The Algerian City and the Protest Movement A Sociological Approach

Addressing protest movements in Algerian cities, this study investigates the societal factors behind the movement, attempting to identify its forms, the social groups who took part in it, the institutions targeted, and the nature of the demands. The authors then link these factors with urban policies practiced in Algerian cities. The study is divided into a theoretical part --with a descriptive and a historical review of the roots of the protest movement in the Algerian city-- and an applied part focusing on the survey of written materials in the media, providing a daily record of events in various Algerian cities, including an analysis of the alignments involved. While the study is mostly descriptive in its method, it does offer some predictions about the fate of these protest movements in the near future.
