Gender Discrimination in the Academic Environment: Perceptions of Women Professors at the Lebanese University

Volume 15|Issue 57| Summer 2026 |Articles

Abstract

This article explores how women professors at the Lebanese University perceive gender discrimination. Evidence confirms the existence of such discrimination, yet interviews with twenty professors from diverse generations and regions reveal they often downplay its significance – denying either its existence or its impact on their careers. This perception can be attributed to the conservative academic environment, strong identification with the university, social mobility provided by academic roles, familial encouragement, ability to balance work and family, and overall professional satisfaction. Using an intersectional lens, the article shows these attitudes emerge from complex contexts, where feminism, discrimination, and inequality hold different meanings across individual experiences.
